Antarctic Palm Trees? What... How... When? Read on to find out!
Scientists have been delving deep in to the secrets of nature recently and have pulled up proof that palm trees once grew in Antarctica! Analyses of pollen and spores and remains of tiny creatures have given a picture or the early Eocene period! (around 53 million years ago). The study suggests that Antarctic temperature exceeded 10C while summers may have reached up to 22C! That's like a sunny hot day in Dinnington, but in Antarctica! Its weird to think that you could of gone to Antarctica in shorts and flip-flops 53 million years ago! People now know Antarctica to be covered in snow and ice, and a very cold place to be in... But also that global warming is melting the polar ice caps, could global warming have anything to do with the Eocene period and its subtropical conditions?
Women's rowing pair Helen Glover and Heather Stanning have won Team GB's first gold medal of the London Olympics.
The duo also became the first British women to take an Olympic rowing gold in front of an ecstatic crowd at Eton Dorney.
A short while later, the men's eight claimed bronze behind Germany and Canada, the champions in Beijing.
Glover and Stanning led from the front in a dominant performance which saw the opposition trail in their wake. The favourites crossed the line in 7 minutes, 27.13 seconds. Australia took silver, a length back, with New Zealand earning the bronze.
After finishing, Glover and Stanning hugged each other with joy and saluted the crowd, which included Prince William and Harry and the Princess Royal.
Louis Smith described yesterday as a 'beautiful day' for British gymnastics after Team GB won its first men's team Olympic medal since 1912.
Smith won pommel horse bronze at the Beijing Games, but last night the whole team performed to the best of their ability, and that's why they got the bronze.
He said: 'British gymnastics has been growing and growing. Now everyone will be more motivated than ever. This means so much and we've still got the finals left. It's a beautiful day for the sport and for British gymnastics.'
The group rose from forth to second after a sensational final rotation on the floor. However they had to settle for bronze after an appeal by Japan.
Just when you thought those One Direction boys couldn't be any more talented, they go and release an online video blog of them showcasing their non-singing skills.
Like Harry juggling, Niall playing the guitar, the girl magnet and (our favourite) unidentified, unofficial sixth member of the band free running. Up a wall. Over Harry's head. OK, so standing underneath someone who isn't even in the band isn't necessarily a talent but it's Harry risking his life!
The new video blog gives us a glimpse into life on the road as we go behind-the-scenes with the boys on their Up All Night tour of the US.
Two teenagers have been injured after being catapulted from a fairground ride!
The two boys were on the Mega Bounce Frog ride at Billy Bates Fairground in Abbey
Park, Leicester, when their carriage suddenly broke off from the ride on Saturday evening.
Because of this incident, one of the youngsters has been in intensive care in a hopsital after suffering a broken arm,
ribs and chest injuries. The other teenager suffered a broken nose and teeth.
They are both believed to be around 16-years-old. A very scary and sad outcome from this tragic event!
The 18-year-old, from Leicester, said: "The ride was going pretty fast, and
when the carriage came off everyone just went crazy."
"There were lots of kids on the ride and they were all crying. When it
stopped their parents ran towards them and quickly took them out of their
seats."
"The whole thing was shocking. The two lads could have died if the carriage
had fallen off mid-air."
The ride itself has a number of carriages which all spin at a low level gathering speed. Luckily the accident happened when the ride was at its lowest level. Who knows what could of happened if the boys had been thrown off when the ride was at its highest level...
Because of this heart breaking event the fairground in Leicster has been shut down for health and safety reasons. Obviously...
Alollipop is a type of sweet
consisting mainly of hardened, flavored sucrose with corn syrup mounted on a
stick and intended for sucking or licking. Lollipops are available in many
different shapes, sizes and flavors!
I’m sure we have all had or at least seen some kind of lollipop. And most
kids love the things! But just think about the last time you had a lollipop.
Was it just a small one wrapped up in some kind of foil material? Well, what
would you say to a lollipop that is probably 100 times the size of a basic
sized lollipop!?
Well, See’s Candies in America have just broken the Guinness
World Record for the largest lollipop! How cool is that!? The massive chocolate
lollipop weighs an astonishing 7,000 pounds and is currently displayed in San
Francisco! This lollipop was made to celebrate National Lollipop Day on Friday
the 20th of July.
The company’s CEO Brad Kinstler said: “We are so
pleased to have created a larger than life version of our favourite
candy-on-a-stick.”
Sadly though, nobody will get the chance to taste
the magnificent lolly as it is due to be recycled into other sweet treats!
A new calendar depicts guinea pigs going for gold at a huge sporting events, just like the olympics. The Guinea Pig Games 2013 calendar features the furry
creatures competing in a variety of Olympic events.
China have once again dominated the competition in the third day of events, with Great Britain trailing behind after another disappointing performance. Last year's hosts continue to show unparalleled sporting talent with yet more medals to add to their ever-growing tally.
In the morning, China immediately got into their stride with gold medals in men's 10 metre synchronized diving and women's 58kg weightlifting. Another surprise win in the men's team gymnastics, where the USA scored the top spot in qualifying but failed to reach the podium. Great Britain's team placed third and gained a bronze medal; the first Olympic medal in this event since 1912. The USA took two bronze medals before noon, giving them an opportunity to overtake in the later events.
Despite efforts by the USA, China still lead the medal table. France are in third, North Korea in fourth and Italy in fifth. Great Britain have dropped down to 20th position.
