Charity: Water, Rachel Beckwith's Story

Samantha Beckwith and her parents, travelled to Ethiopia to see some of the wells that Samantha's daughter, Rachel Beckwith, raised the money for.

Last year Rachel was an average nine-year-old with a loving family. She had a heart that wanted to solve every problem in the world and help every person. To make wigs for children that had cancer, she even cut of her hair and donated it to the Charity's saying "My hair will grow back so another child, whose hair can't, can have mine". When in church, there was a sermon performed by Scott Harrison, from Charity: water, who talked about 9-years-old in Africa who don't have clean, infection and disease free water to drink. She immediately decided to help. She created a fund raising page on mycharitywater.org, with her mums help, which told her friends and family to instead of getting her some presents for her up-coming birthday, to donate $9 to help the people in Africa.

She set up a goal of $300 but unfortunately fell short, only raising $220. But she wasn't phased, and said to her mum "I'll try harder next year". Sadly a month later, Rachel was involved in a terrible car accident on the highway I-90 in Washington where a trailer jack-knifed into a logging truck. This sent logs tumbling down the freeway, where more than a dozen cars were caught in a pile-up. The trailer smashed into the back of a car, which had Rachel in it. She was the only person seriously injured and on the 23rd of July 2011 she was taken of life support and died. News quickly spread around of Rachel's birthday wish and people all around the world started donating to her page. Some people gave $9 and some people gave $19. And a month later 30,000 people had given over $1.2 million.

On the year anniversary of her death, her mum and grandparents travelled to Ethiopia to visit the wells that Rachel raise for. The community planned a memorial service in honour of her. After the service, in a nearby church then walked to one of the newest wells and cut the ribbon and watched as children ran over and drank the water. The children all wrote notes about Rachel and gave them to her mum.A mother from the village made a speech and said Rachel’s story would be a lesson to their children. She said that all the mothers in her village were praying for Samantha. Another community sectioned off a plot of land and called it Rachel’s Park. They invited Samantha and her grandparents each to plant a tree in Rachel’s memory. They also made a marble sign which said “Rachel’s great dream, kindness and vision of a better world will live with and among us forever.”

60,000 people in over 100 villages will drink clean water because of Rachel’s wish. Samantha continues to fund raise in Rachel’s Honor.

Ahhh, Cute!

Cute dogWe all love cute animals like dogs and tiny kittens, but what if looking at pictures like that could make you better at concentrating.

Scientists in Japan have said that looking at images of cute animals can improve your focus. They tested it with lots of willing subjects and the end result was that if you look at pictures of cute animals then you are most likely to get a better grade than if looking at not so cute ones. The first of the 2 tests was an Operation style board game and the second was finding numbers on a grid. The study was done by a team of scientists at Hiroshima University in japan.

Blue Honey?

Bee-keepers in Northern France have been shocked to see that their bees have been producing blue and green honey! The bee-keepers think that the source of the problem is a nearby bio gas plant. It is also thought that the bees have been eating the sugary waste from M&Ms. The bio gas said that they have put a procedure in place so that it won't happen again. The company that deals with the M&M waste say that they will clean out all of their containers, and store all incoming waste in airtight containers so that the bees can't get in and eat any more. The blue honey on the other hand is unsellable so no one can have M&M honey.

Facebook Reaches 1 Billion Users!

There are now an amazing 1 billion people using this social networking site called Facebook every single month each year!

Facebook is a social networking site that was launched in February 2004. Facebook lets people around the world chat and communicate to each other by this networking site. Facebook also lets you play different types of games as well!

The Facebook founder called Mark Zuckerberg made this spectacular announcement on the American TV on Thursday (4th October 2012). Mark posted this on his profile not so long back:

Thank you for giving me and my little team the honor of serving you.”

Mark Zuckerburg
Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life.”

Because of this huge and magnificent announcement, Facebook have released a special online video to celebrate the billion users on Facebook.

Right now there are currently a whopping 243 million users on Facebook in Europe. The highest number coming directly from us, the UK! However Facebook isn’t as popular across some other countries as China and Russia don’t use Facebook anywhere near as much as what we do in the UK.

Mammoth Remains Discovered

An 11 year old boy found a perfectly preserved mammoth carcass in Sopochnaya Karga, which is in Siberia. The body was found lying in frozen mood; it took experts five days to uncover it completely. The enormous creature has been named Zhenya after the boy who found the bones while on a walk with his dogs. The mammoth was well preserved meaning that it will be easier for scientists to carry out numerous tests and analyse the carcass.

Scientists estimated that the mammal weighed approximately 500kg, was 2 metres tall and was about 16 years old at the time of its death. They have also stated that the animal could have been killed by a fellow mammoth or by the last ice age; which still makes the carcass extremely old. It was only found with one tusk, but that is still enough for scientists to be able to find out what the poor animal went through during it's life. They can achieve this by cutting the tusk in half and analysing the lines inside; just like we do to find out how old a tree is.

This is an important find because we can still learn a lot from carcasses like these, and they will help us understand what different animal species went through a long time ago.

Cher Lloyd was born on the 28th of July 1993 and she is an English recording artist. Cher Lloyd rose to her fame when she finished 4th in the seventh series of the XFactor. Shortly after her success, Simon Cowell signed Lloyd to Sony Music subsidiary.

Cher Lloyd has just released her new album in the US, and she has added a special song to the album too! It is called: Stand Behind The Music. At first the song sounds quite country-ish but then it goes into a military plodding bit and then of course, Lloyd gets involved in a lot of rapping and half-rap-half-singing bit in the middle of the song.

However, on the bright side, according to ‘Digital Spy’, her new song Stand Behind The Music is expected to be indulged on a deluxe re-package of the UK album that is set to be released in November of this year (2012).

Missing April Jones

On Monday April Jones, a five year old girl from Wales, was reported missing when she was out playing with her friends.

She was last seen by another girl her age at approximately 7:30pm when she supposably got into a light coloured van (similar to a Ford Transit or a land rover) then seconds later it drove off and she hasn't been seen since.

Searches were launched around the local area and most of the village got involved as they continued over night. However there has been no luck!

A 46 year old man has been arrested for suspected child abduction. The man is local and has been reported to drive a vehicle to the one in the police appeal. He was arrested when he was walking on the side of the road, a couple of miles from the welsh village.

The man is apparently known to family but is not related in anyway.

Officers are currently examining a van found near a bridge, two or three miles north of the town. Pictures showed a white Ford Transit van surrounded by several police cars. They're searching the surrounding area, including the banks of the local river.

Police have asked anyone with information to call them on 0300 200 0333

A Comet That Could Out-Shine The Moon!

It's been reported, according to astronomers, that a newly discovered comet could be brighter than the moon!

Astronomers in Russia recently spotted the comet (2012 S1 - ISON) 90 million kilometres from the Earth.

The comet is currently a small glow that lies between Jupiter and Saturn however the Sun's gravity is currently drawing the comet closer, the dust and ice will be blasted off, which will give it a bright glow.

The comet may expand by the tail and depending on that if it becomes three kilometres wide it could become hugely visible by late 2013 or early 2014!

"If it lives up to expectations, this comet may be one of the brightest in history," Raminder Singh Samra of the H R MacMillan Space Centre in Canada told National Geographic.

This comet is following the path of the brightest comet back in 1690, this was the most tremendous comet the wary had ever seen.

Mr Samra has warned scientist when waiting for the comet to be careful, because if this is the brightest come ever, viewing it through a telescope would lead to severe consequences.

JJB's Closure Leads To A Loss Of Jobs!

After many years of sales, JJB decided to shut down over 130 stores. This meant that over 2,200 people's jobs have been made redundant.

Sports direct have bought 20 of the JJB stores for over £23M. This saves over 550 jobs, but over 1,000 jobs have still been taken away.

However the boss of JJB said that he made sure that all holidays and wages were paid full before they were made redundant. He also added that he has given them help into finding employees a new job or even a job at another one of there stores.

JJB Sports put itself up for sale last month, but shareholders were warned they were likely to be left empty-handed.

Wigan Athletic owner Dave Whelan bought the first JJB store in Wigan in 1971 and rapidly expanded the company to become the UK's biggest sports retailer with more than 400 stores.

Mars Rover Finds Evidence Of Water

Nasa's mars rover 'Curiosity' has recently discovered evidence of a stream on Mars after finding steam bed gravel on the planet for the first time. Previously scientists had found other evidence that water could have been on Mars, but steam bed gravel has never before been discovered on Mars.

These pictures prove that 'Curiosity' revealed and show that the pebbles on mars were cemented into the layers of rock. The evidence has been found at the base of Mount Sharp, where Curiosity is currently exploring. The shape and size of the rocks indicate an idea of the speed and depth of the stream. The ancient streams depth is believed to be as deep as your ankle. Scientists have discovered that the water couldn't be travelled by wind, so it had to have travelled by water flow.

Man Freed From Bin After Getting Head Stuck.

The fire brigade received a call saying that a man in Aberdeen had got his head stuck inside a rubbish bin.

No one appears to know why the man had his head inside the bin in the first place and how he then got it stuck inside.

The firefighters have confirmed that the man has no injuries from when he had his head stuck or when he was cut free.

Although they said this the man still went for a check up at the local hospital, just to be safe.

Lets hope no one gets the same idea of this man.

The £50 Note That Is Worth £820

Collectors quickly snapped up UK banknotes with low serial numbers at a recent charity auction.

One of the highlights from the Bank of England auction was that a £50 note sold for a staggering £820. The auction was raising money for charity, and at the end of the day managed to make £50,000. The serial number for the note was AA01 000888 meaning it was one of the newest of the brand new £50 note designs. Early serial numbers are cherished amongst notaphilists, paper money collectors. The number 8 is also considered lucky in Asia, which is where most of the collectors live.

The note was one of the recent 2011 designs which has Matthew Bolton, a entrepreneur, and James Watt, a engineer, on one of the sides. It also features the Bank of England Chief Cashiers signature.Another £50 note with the serial number AA01 000013 sold for £700, while AA01 000018 went for £660. The reason why people go to these auctions is because it is the only way for them to get the notes as the bank deliberately held them back for the sales. The notes ending in 01 are given to the Queen, the notes ending with 02 are given to the Duke of Edinburgh and the noted ending with 03 given to the Prime Minister.

The proceeds from the auction will be split between UK charities the British Association for Adoption & Fostering and the Kids Company.
