After the dramatic opening ceremony broadcast to billions around the world, day 1 of the 2012 Olympic Games saw swimming and cycling events capture the headlines.
Plenty of action took place by the poolside with a total of 4 finals in the new aquatics centre. Ryan Lochte (USA) took gold in the 400-metre individual medley after rival Michael Phelps failed to qualify for the final. The women's 400-metre individual medley went to 16 year old Ye Shiwen (China) with a world record beating time of 4:28.43, while Sun Yang (China) came just 0.07 seconds off the pace of the men's 400-metre individual freestyle record time. Australia were able to sneak ahead of the Netherlands to win the 400-metre freestyle relay.
Team GB's Mark Cavendish failed to live up to expectation, finishing just 28th in the Road Race. The event was won by Alexander Vinokourov (Kazakhstan), who will retire after th games have ended.
China have clearly dominated this first day of competition with a healthy-looking 4 golds to reach the top of the table. Italy follow close behind with the USA in third. Great Britain failed to win a medal.

BOY OF 11 FLEW TO ROME WITHOUT BEING QUESTIONED
Liam Corcoran-Fort, who had no ticket or passport with him, went searching for the loo after leaving his Mother outside Manchester airport.
Before this incident, 5 members of staff have been suspended JUST before the Olympics.
Liam easily managed to get through FIVE security checks.
His Mother, Mary 29, said "How did he go that far without anyone asking him a question? I just think how easy it would be for a terrorist. It's unbelievable."
Transport Secretary Justine Greening said: “This is an unusual and serious breach and we are keen to find out what has gone on.”

Bottlenose Dolphins put on a aerial show as they arrive in British Waters
This picture shows the Dolphins flipping and diving in the air off the coast of Inverness in Scotland.
They seem to be happy and enjoying the British waters as they compete against each other.
Furthermore, these fascinating species have not been seen in British waters since the mid - 1990's.

Kitten Survives 6,500-Mile Trip In Shipping Container.
A kitten is recovering in America after surviving a
6,500-mile trip across the Pacific Ocean - with no food or water!
The three-month-old kitten was discovered inside a shipping container in California, after a two-week journey from Shanghai in China.
At first he was too weak to stand up, but he's finally taking his first steps thanks to expert medical care.
The kitten's been named Ni Hao, which means "Hello" in Mandarin.
It's not clear how the kitten got inside the shipping container in the first place.
Officials in America are now looking for a family to adopt him.
Robot Surgeon Performs First UK Cancer Operations
A robot "surgeon" has operated on a cancer patient for the
first time at Newcastle's Freeman Hospital.
The robot, called Da Vinci, is remotely controlled and will help patients with certain types of cancer.
The £2m robot is operated remotely by a surgeon a few feet away who controls the cutting blades through a high-definition 3D microscope.
Da Vinci's "hands" can reach into smaller spaces than humans can, making operations much simpler to perform.
Surgeons at the hospital in
Newcastle say they will use Da Vinci to do all sorts of different operations -
including heart surgery.
In France robots like this are
already used in 50 hospitals.
A French surgeon came to
advise the doctors in Newcastle. He said: "This robotic assistance increases the
level of technique and the quality of surgery."
