Are you Type 1 Diabetes aware?

Type 1 Diabetes develops when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the cells that produce insulin. Insulin is a hormone, produced by the pancreas, which is central to regulating carbohydrate and fat metabolism in the body. The pancreas is an organ in the Digestive system. No one yet knows how and why the body rejects the pancreas and it is still waiting to be un-covered. The cells are killed off and the body is un-able to control its glucose blood levels and the symptoms of Type 1 diabetes begin to appear.

Without treatment, Type 1 Diabetes can be deadly even fatal; you could end up in hospital seriously ill and on a drip or even end up having a blood transfusion.

Symptoms may include:
  • ·         Above average thirst
  • ·         Feeling tired or run down
  • ·         Sleeping for a long period of time often
  • ·         Needing to use the bathroom regularly
  • ·         Losing weight very rapidly
  • ·         Skin infections

Type 1 Diabetes is a serious condition, and if within doubt, see the local GP and they will test your blood glucose. If you are then experiencing some of these symptoms, and your blood glucose results come back as high (the average for non-diabetics is between 6mmols and 8mmols) they will begin to investigate why and hopefully find they answer to your problems.

Type 1 diabetics can occur at any age and any gender; it can also be family heredity, or you may not have any family members with the medical condition. Type 1 diabetics have to manage their own blood glucose and take a replacement for the insulin cells which have been destroyed. They have to prick their fingers and produce a small amount of blood which they then put on to a strip attached to a blood meter which in turn reads how much glucose is in the blood. After doing that, the diabetic then counts how much insulin they need to take for the amount of food they are going to eat. The diabetic then either self-injects a formula that acts like insulin or has a machine called a pump which is attached to the body and delivers the insulin formula via a tube. The diabetic person takes a blood glucose reading before every meal and before bedtime alongside with a dose of insulin. Blood glucose readings need to be within 4mmols and 8mmols if they aren’t there can be serious consequences.

Hypoglycaemia, or also knows as low blood glucose or low blood sugar occurs when blood glucose drops below normal levels (below 4mmols). Glucose, an important source of energy for the body, comes from the food you eat. Carbohydrates are the main dietary source of glucose.  A hypo can be caused if you take too much insulin. It can also be caused if you miss a meal, don’t eat enough foods containing carbohydrate or if you take part in physical activity without eating enough to compensate for it. Another cause can be drinking too much alcohol or drinking alcohol without eating beforehand. There are some symptoms of a hypo these are; sweating, going pale compared to your normal skin tone, feeling your heart pounding, being confused, feeling sick, feeling irritable, being shaky. Some people also suffer with hypo-unawareness, this is life threatening and very dangerous, but sadly nothing can be done about this. If you have a hypo, you must eat or drink something sugary straight away. Then eat something containing longer-lasting carbohydrates such as a sandwich, toast or a piece of fruit. Test your blood glucose level to see whether it's returning to normal. If it's not, and you can't seem to come out of the hypo, call for emergency help immediately.

A hyperglycaemia is where your blood glucose levels can become too high, this can occur if you’re stressed or unwell, your insulin dose is too low, you miss doses, or if you eat too much carbohydrate. Hyperglycaemia can cause you to be more thirsty than usual, feel tired and have headaches. Rarely, glucose can build up in your blood and reach dangerous levels. This is called diabetic ketoacidosis. It can cause you to vomit, breathe faster than usual and have breath that smells of ketones (like pear drops or nail varnish). Diabetic ketoacidosis is a medical emergency and can be fatal if you aren't treated in hospital immediately. In the long-term, hyperglycaemia can increase your risk of: kidney failure, nerve damage, blindness, heart disease, and strokes.

There are two main types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2. About two million people in the UK have diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is the rarer form, affecting between five and 10 of every 100 people with diabetes. If you think you or someone you know might have either type of diabetes don’t hesitate to see your GP.

One Direction change their name.

One Direction, a US boy band change their name to avoid clash with the UK boys.

The US boys finally agreed to change their name even though they claim, they had the name, One Direction first. Earlier this year the group challenged the X Factor stars and warned them, the name One Direction was already taken. In the end the US punk boy band came to a decision and have now changed their name to Uncharted ShoresThe American group said that they had received hate mail from fans of the UK band. Simon Cowell's entertainment company thought that the boys were trying to make money from the UK band's success.

Both groups now say they are happy with the outcome. Now the teen superstars can concentrate on this weekend's MTV VMA awards in Los Angeles.

Where Are The Kids?

School has been back for 2 days now, but the question on most schools minds is: 'Where are the kids?'

Young spectators on the Olympic Park during the ParalympicsEven though school has started for a new term this week, most children aren't attending, so they can go to the Paralympics. Because of this, some schools have extended their holidays until the end of the 11 day games so the kids don't miss lessons. But some other schools were using the paralympics as an educational exercise. One school in the south of Wales was missing half of its year 6 class.

Parents say that they wanted to teach their children about the importance of taking part and to use the elite sport to inform their child's opinions on disabled people. One young boy said "The people are in wheelchairs or are blind or deaf - I don't know how they do it."

The Dark Knight Rises Review

The Dark Knight Rises

Plot - Eight years on; a new terrorist leader, Bane, overwhelms Gotham's finest, and the Dark Knight resurfaces to protect a city that has branded him an enemy (IMDB.com).

I didn't like 'Batman Begins'; I found it slow and boring, however I love The Dark Knight. The characters and soundtrack are amazing! So I had to watch The Dark Knight Rises.

The Dark Knight Rises has very good plot, it kept you on your toes the whole time and had some great twists. However it's way too long; it's not the best when the cinema seats are uncomfortable. In the trailer some of the plot's details were given which ruined some parts of the film. For example, Cat Woman turning good. Speaking of Cat Woman, I liked her when she was stealing and a criminal, but when she started to help out Batman I felt like that was unlike her charater to do that. I think she was only called Cat Woman once, which was a bit weird. Bane, the main villain looked great but when he spoke... Well, he sounded like Sean Connery, who has a very kind voice. He's no joker! I found that the The Dark Knight was way better as the villain was scary and we watched super hero films to see the villains!

Overall I thought it was okay; I wouldn't get it on DVD though.

RIP Michael Clarke Duncan (John Coffey)

The Green Mile is one of my favourite films, so when I heard that the actor who played one of the main characters John Coffey had died, I was very sad. I would highly recommend you watch The Green Mile!

He died on the 3rd of September aged 54, two months after suffering a severe heart attack.

Spider-man review

The Amazing Spider-Man

Plot - Peter Parker finds a clue that might help him understand why his parents disappeared when he was young. His path puts him on a collision course with Dr. Curt Connors, his father's former partner (IMDB.com).

I'm a big fan of the Tobey Maguire films, so I was looking forword to seeing this film. I watched it in 3D IMAX and it's amazing!!! It looks so awesome flying through the city with Spider-Man.
However, I think I like the 2002 film better, as I felt there was more heart in the film with Peter and his uncle and aunt. I think Andrew Garfield is a good actor, but I don't think he is nerdy enough for Peter Parker. Emma Stone is also a good actor but I liked the character of

Mary Jane Watson more. In most super hero films the main female role has a happy family and their dad is in the army or police, which gets old. When Mary had a very unhappy family, she was different.

The story is ok but you know whats going to happen and most people have seen the 2002 film. Which means you don't get that sad when his uncle dies. I didn't like how the villain looked as well; his flat face was weird and he should have had a snout, as thats more lizard like. Also the soundtrack was horrible; in one scene where the Lizard is looking for Emma Stone's character, it sounds like a child's playing the piano and smashing the keys down. Also, I hated the fact he built a machine that let him shoot webs, unlike the 2002 where he had it as a power. So... the new Spider Man has the power to climb.

Over all it wasn't as good as the 2002 film, it only looked better (better CGI), and I probably wouldn't get it on DVD.

GaGa More Powerful Than The Queen??

Lady Gaga has beaten the Queen in a top 100 most powerful women list made by a US magazine.

Gaga came 14th, beating the Queen by 12 places. The list is made every year based on how much money, power and influence they have. Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany, took the top spot for the second year in a row. There was only two women from the UK in the list, Harry Potter, author JK Rowling and Her Majesty.

Paralympic GB Cyclist Jody Cundy Disqualified.

There was drama in the Velodrome as GB cyclist Jody Cundy was disqualified from the C4-5 1km time trial.

His rear wheel slipped when leaving the starting gate and he was refused a second chance after officials ruled it was Cundy's fault.

Cundy was furious. He said: "I've wasted four years of my life to ride in front of 6,000 people."

The world champion later returned to apologise to the crowd for his angry reaction.

Fellow Brit Jon-Allan Butterworth went on to win silver in the event.

Cundy won two golds at the last Paralympics in Beijing. He used to be a swimmer but switched to cycling in 2006.

He was born with a deformed right foot which was amputated at the age of three.

Oscar Pistorius In Shock 200m Defeat To Alan Oliveira.

Oscar Pistorius beaten by Alan Oliveira

South African star Oscar Pistorius has lost his 200m title, in the biggest shock of the Paralympics so far.

The 'Blade Runner' was beaten by Brazil's Alan Oliveira, who stormed past the favourite in the last 20 metres of the race.

Afterwards, Pistorius questioned whether his rival's prosthetic legs were too long and gave him an unfair advantage.

"We are not running in a fair race here," Pistorius told Channel 4.

"I don't know how you can come back, watching the replay, from eight metres behind on the 100 to win. It's absolutely ridiculous."

He's now apologised for the timing of his remarks.

Paralympic bosses said that Oliveira's legs were within the rules.

The Bolt Of The Paralympics

36 year old Richard Whitehead stunned everyone watching the men's T42 200 metres as he went from last place and ended up winning!

He only took up sprinting last year, his preferred subject was the T46 marathon but the IPC (International Paralympic Committee) said that he was ineligible for it. He was the under dog for this race but with a stadium full of people cheering him on, he came through to win in 24.38 seconds, smashing his own world mark of 24.93 seconds. He now has the 100m and 200m left in his categories.

He was born without his lower legs and so he has to use prosthetic ones to get around. Before the race, he accidentally left his prosthetic legs at the warm up track which caused his medal ceremony to be delayed but that didn't take the shine out of his achievement.
Below is a link for a video of the race.
