The Olympic Torch Has Landed!

The plane carrying the torch for the London 2012 Olympics has finally arrived on British soil.

The plane touched down at a Cornish air base just before 19:30BST carrying Princess Anne, Locog chairman Lord Coe and footballer David Beckham. The torch arrived in style, on a Golden British Airways plane, called the Fire Fly, made especially for the torch's transport from Athens to Lands End. The flame was kept in a miners lamp during the flight to ensure it didn't go out. The torch has changed alot since the first torch was lit in 1928. Here are some of the torches - from left to right - Helsinki Torch 1952, Mexico City Torch 1968 and The New London Torch 2012

And Dinnington Comprehensive is very proud to have a  pupil and a teacher that will be doing their part in getting the torch to London.Pupil Jack Waring will be carrying it through Scunthorpe and was nominated by his mum. And our own P.E teacher Miss Abdulkarim will also be carrying the torch through Chapeltown on the 25th of June. She was nominated by her mum as she is the first headscarf wearing Muslim to play for England and to coach an England team.

And we are all counting down the days until the first London Olympics in 63 years!!

Elephant plays the harmonica!

A very talented elephant in Washington, America learns to play the harmonica!

Shanthi (the elephant) was given the musical instrument after the keepers noticed she loved making lots of noise! When they strapped the harmonica onto the bars of her cage at Smithsonian Zoo somthing amazing happend.

The 36 year old indian elephant began to throw out amazing notes hours at a time. Her keepers managed to catch this unbelivable moment on video! Watch it below...

Shanthi loves to play the harmonica, even if she hasn't even got an audience, shes still there blowing in and out to make loud sounds!

Her keepers were especially surprised, because she even ignored her favourite thing in the world - food - to play music!

Before keepers gave Shanthi the harmonica, they noticed she seemed to make musical sounds any way she could. She'd tap things with her trunk, rub her leg against trees to a rythmn and flap her ears to make noise. So they decided to let her take her musical passion to the next level... and now this gifted giant is wowing visitors to her zoo.

Mark Bushell, assistant curator of invertebrates at Bristol Zoo, said: "This species is one of the most beautiful types of tarantula around.

"When the spiderlings first hatch, they are tiny and translucent but they gradually develop, moult and turn into little blue fluffy tarantulas and are very eye-catching."

Google Glasses!

Google has just invented google glasses. But there not as good as there supposed to be.

'Prodject Glass' was announced in April. They claimed they were amazing and the user could access the web at any time of the day through stamp sized screens in the glasses thay would fill they're whole eye.

But now google have admitted that the imformation will only be displayed in one area in the specs (above one eye). They say that the colour graphics will be replaced by a much similar display.

Google insist that the specs are still high-tech and hope the customers will still be attracted by the built-in camera. But they still haven't been released in public.

Google glasses shows map of shopThe specs are still being tested by the Google X teamto see if they could work in everyday life. when they are released they are said to be priced at around £160 to £320.

Google Glasses 'Not that good'

Google have admitted that their internet glasses they advertised will probably be not as good as people expected.
Project Glass was announced in April that people could access the web through stamp sized screens in the glasses that would fit the whole eye. They now say it will only be displayed in a smell section above one eye. Colour graphics could also be displayed with something much simpler.

Poetry.

Poetry will help you in life. It's helps you get through unacceptable situations. Poetry is used at weddings, funerals, christenings as well as at home.

Many people write a commentary with their poem. A commentary is where you get your inspiration from. I decided to write a poem on loneliness, this is my commentary...

I chose to do my poem on ‘Loneliness’ because it used to happen to someone who I care about in my family. Loneliness is an unpleasant feeling, it’s hard to get on with life without having many friends. My family member use to think that he was so unreal, that he thought he might just drift away.

Luckily, there are a number of ways to overcome loneliness. My relation found one way that worked and everything went back to normal.

Now you know my commentary, here is my poem...

You always have your ups and downs

Seeing him come home like this makes me cry a river of tears

Such a pity

A boy not even ten, he feels so alienated and alone…

No one could see his pain and reach out to him.

One day I hope he will find one trusted friend or one

special teacher

to help him become his normal self and bring the light back to his eyes.

He feels all alone, small and weak

Scared to go out, even to speak

The things they say, the things they do

Would you like it, if it were you?

This poem made my cousin smile.
Do you have a poem that helps you in life?

Junk Food Tax To Stop Obesity.

The government say that if fast food items are more expensive then less people will buy it more often. This should take down to level of obesity massively as fast food is one of the main reasons it exists in the first place.
But it isn't just McDonalds and Burger King, things like Haribo and other sweets will also be affected along side fizzy drinks such as Coca-Cola.

More than 10 million people in the UK are obese and 30,000 die each year from problems caused by their weight.
Researchers claim a tax on unhealthy foods could cut the number of deaths from heart disease by almost 3,000 a year.

There are no plans to bring the tax in yet and these are only suggestions at this stage.

Is your pet as talented as Pudsey?

Pudsey the dog and his owner Ashleigh have been voted Britain's Got Talent 2012 winners! Their dance routine based around the theme tune for Mission Imbossible boosted them over opera singers Jonathon And Charlotte.

Simon always favoured the dancing dog and way back at the auditions he said that he thought they could win!

The pair have half a million pounds to spend, bearing in mind Ashleigh is only 16 years old!

The winners of Britains Got Talent Ashleigh and Pudsey are superstars.

They beat opera pair Jonathan and Charlotte (thought to be the winners) but Pusdey topped their preformance with a dance routine based around the theme tune from Mission Impossible. Simon Cowell has completed his wish and is very pleased a dog act won! Way back when auditions took place he told Newsround he had high hopes a talented dog would win this year.

Do you have a talented pet?

Could you be £500,000 richer just from your pet? Could your pet wow the judges too? Do you have cat who gets up to crazy capers?

Here are some pictures of other peoples pets...

Ten-year-old Bryony's dog Charlie likes to look cool.

What do people say about their pets?

"My guinea pig Bubble likes to dance around."
"My pet has talent for the most laziest pet."
"Our cat Lilly can do back flips and fishes out milk tops from the bin, then gives them to us for her to fetch!"

What about your pet?

Poo machine on show in America.

This unusual machine causes a stink in Australia, which dosen't surprise me.
Poo machine

A humans stomach is now series of glass containers which work exactly like a persons body. Hardly any visitors can take the awful smell.  Food is put in twice a day which is then digested and comes out the other end! The artwork was built by Belgian artist Wim Delvoye, but it's not the first time he's made one. 'The Cloaca Professiona' is in a series of at least five similar works. If you want to see the poo machine this one is on show at the Museum of Old and New Art in Tasmania, and another one is heading to the Louvre in Paris soon.

Running Away

A runaway is someone who has run away from where they live or someone who is thinking and wants to run away.

Some of the main reasons you might want to run away could be:
  • Arguements with your family
  • Violence in your family
  • Problems at school
  • Running away from care
  • A stressful situation
  • Cultural reasons
  • Physical/Sexual abuse
Living on the streets is very hard and you will be cold, hungry and in danger from other people. Being on the streets when you are young is dangerous.

If you are feeling unhappy or are being hurt by someone, running away will not make it better. You will have different problems if you run away and are on the streets. Sometimes it can feel like there is no other option but to run away from things. If you feel this way then sometimes it can help to talk things through with someone else first, as there may be options you had not thought of. Some of the people you might want to talk to could include a parent or other family member, a teacher, a care worker or social worker.

Staying Safe Online

It's important to know how to stay safe when you're using the internet. You should never give out any personal information when you're online to people you do not know face to face - no matter who you think you're talking to.
Some of you may have your own Facebook account that lets you chat with friends and other users. Social network sites are a great way of keeping in touch with people, but you should think carefully before adding someone to your list of friends or posting information that you wouldn't be happy with people seeing.

When you're using a chat room with somebody, NEVER give out any personal information like your address or your phone number. By doing this, you can get yourself into serious trouble because what can happen is; if you decide to give somebody your personal details thinking that it's a friend your giving it to, when actually that somebody your giving your details to turns out to be somebody that is faking who they are and pretending to be one of your friends, then you could be putting yourself into EXTREME danger! So just think again before doing that!

Some websites will ask you to fill out a registration form before you can use what's on the website. This may sound normal to you but it's a good idea to find out what the website will do with your personal details. All companies that collect information have to tell their customers how personal information will be used. Make sure you check the website's terms and conditions before you use the website.

Finally, whenever you use a social network site or any other of that kind where it asks you to make a username and a password so you can get on and off the site. ALWAYS make sure, when you make those usernames and passwords you make sure that they are totally random, (especially the password) so that no body could ever in a million years guess it! If you use a very simple password like "hello" then it is very likely that somebody will guess it so they can get into your account. It's the same with a username, if you make a username that is just your name then somebody will more likely guess it so it's always safe to use random words for your username and password!

Now You Would Want These On Your Birthday.

Baker extraordinaire Debbie Goard creates cakes that look so much like savoury dishes or everyday objects, they fool the recipient. Debbie has spent two decades creating edible art in the form of almost anything her customers ask for. Her San Francisco-based Debbie Does Cakes company is so good she says "my cakes often get mistaken for real objects, most notably, the life-sized Chihuahua cake that compelled restaurant patrons to exclaim 'why is there a dog on the table? Her cakes start at a base price of £125 to several thousand. These are my favorite cakes...
