Heaviest Baby Born In England

A baby born weighing 12lb 12oz is thought to be the heaviest girl ever to be born in the UK.
Mum Gemma Tevendale, 26, gave birth to baby Suzie Gzowski three weeks ago. Gemma’s labour lasted only 44 minutes, she gave birth naturally with gas and air and she needed no stitches.
Gemma, from Swindon, Wiltshire, told The Sun that her midwife was stunned.

“They’d said she was going to be big - between 10 to 11 pounds. But when they saw she was 12lbs 12oz they thought the scales had broken.”The newborn already had two teeth at birth, and is now wearing clothes for babies aged three to six months, even though she is under a month old.Suzie’s birth weight was almost double that of the average newborn in the UK, which is 7.5 lb for boys and 7.25 lb for girls.

“When we put her in a 0-3 months suit she looked like she was going to explode out of it”, Gemma said. She explained that her midwife thought eating a lot of fish during her pregnancy might have contributed to her large baby.Gemma said: “I do like fish four times a week. I hadn’t gone overboard with it, although I probably had more than I should – usually tuna and smoked salmon.”Gemma’s two older children were also unusually heavy at birth with son Vincent, now six, weighing 10lb 10oz and daughter Violet, four, 11lb 2oz.

Chile Experts Find Worlds Hottest Pepper

Experts at New Mexico's State University's Chile Pepper Institute have identified the worlds hottest Chile as the Trinidad Morgua Scorpion.

There are super-hot chili varieties. And then there's the sweat-inducing, tear-generating, mouth-on-fire Trinidad Moruga Scorpion. With a name like that, it's not surprising that months of research by the experts at New Mexico's State University's Chile Pepper Institute have identified the variety as the new hottest pepper on the planet. The golf ball-sized pepper scored the highest among a handful of chili breeds reputed to be among the hottest in the world. Its mean heat topped more than 1.2 million units on the Scoville heat scale, while fruits from some individual plants reached 2 million heat units.

"You take a bite. It doesn't seem so bad, and then it builds and it builds and it builds. So it is quite nasty," Paul Bosland, a renowned pepper expert and director of the chili institute, said of the pepper's heat.Researchers were pushed by hot sauce makers, seed producers and others in the spicy foods industry to establish the average heat levels for super-hot varieties in an effort to quash unscientific claims of which peppers are actually the hottest. That's something that hadn't been done before, Bosland said.

"The question was, could the Chile Pepper Institute establish the benchmark for chili heat?" he said. "Chile heat is a complex thing, and the industry doesn't like to base it on just a single fruit that's a record holder. It's too variable." The academic institute is based at the university's agriculture school and is partially funded by federal grants, as well as some industry groups depending on the project. The team planted about 125 plants of each variety – the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion, the Trinidad Scorpion, the 7-pot, the Chocolate 7-pot and the Bhut Jolokia, which was a previous record-holder identified by the institute and certified by Guinness World Records in 2007..Randomly selected mature fruits from several plants within each variety were harvested, dried and ground to powder. The compounds that produce heat sensation – the capsaicinoids – were then extracted and examined.

During harvesting, senior research specialist Danise Coon said she and the two students who were picking the peppers went through about four pairs of latex gloves."The capsaicin kept penetrating the latex and soaking into the skin on our hands. That has never happened to me before," she said.Chile peppers of the same variety can vary in heat depending on environmental conditions. More stress on a plant – hotter temperatures or less water, for example – will result in hotter fruit. The Trinidad Moruga Scorpion's new notoriety is already making waves in the industry and among those who love their hot, spicy foods.

"As with all the previous record holders, there will be a run on seeds and plants," said Jim Duffy, a grower in San Diego who supplied the university with seeds for four of the super-hot varieties. "Like Cabbage Patch dolls right before Christmas or Beanie Babies, it's like the hot item."Not even Duffy or the researchers would dare to pop a whole Trinidad Moruga Scorpion in their mouths, but there are plenty of videos on social networking sites where heat-loving daredevils have tried. The blood flow increases and the endorphins start flowing. Their faces turn red, the sweat starts rolling, their eyes and noses water and there's a fiery sensation that spreads across their tongues and down their throats.

Whitney Houston Fan Burns Her House

A Whitney Housten Fan, Anne Lomax, accidentally sets fire to her house in during a candle-lit vigil for the star who died last weekend.

The 53 year-old, who had been left "devastated" by the events had been playing the singer's records and saying prayers as she mourned her idol. She then lit a candle in the 48 year-old star's memory before going to bed. But the curtains then caught fire from a candle flame and the blaze quickly spread to the TV and electrics in the property.Authorities warned of the dangers of leaving candles on overnight.Mrs Lomax, from Oldham, Greater Manchester, was woken by her smoke alarms just after 2.30am on Valentine's Day, as the fire service raced to the property.

She managed to escape unscathed along with her three dogs while firemen put out the blaze, but the living room of her semi-detached house, in was destroyed.''I had been sitting at the computer playing some music and saying a prayer for Whitney Houston," she said.''I was a big fan and I was just devastated when she died so I thought I'd light a candle.''I was listening to her music and my thoughts were with Whitney."She added: "'I had a little tealight on the window sill.

''I thought I had blown it out when I went up to bed but the next thing I knew the smoke alarms were going off.''I dread to think what would have happened if I didn't have smoke alarms. I could have died."She continued: ''Everyone has candles these days but you don't realise how dangerous they are.''People should be careful with candles. I really thought I'd blown it out, I can't believe the damage it has caused. It's devastating.''

Three fire crews from Oldham and Chadderton Fire Stations were called to the house.Watch manager Rick Taylor said: ''The blaze quickly spread from the curtains to the TV and electrics in the house.''It caused thick black smoke but thankfully they had a working smoke alarm which gave them an early warning. We also managed to rescue three dogs from the property.''Greater Manchester Fire Authority chairman David Acton added: ''Candle safety is so important. Never leave candles unattended, whether you're using them to decorate your home or as a religious symbol, they can be dangerous.

''Remember to extinguish candles before you go to sleep and make sure the candle is standing up straight and is in a proper holder so it can't fall over''.Houston died in Beverly Hills, California, on Saturday.

Save The Best Till Last

The last chocolate in a box or bar has been found to taste the best as knowing that something is set to end makes it taste better according to a new study.

Psychologists discovered that people become “motivated” when they know an experience is about to be completed. The University of Michigan study found that this led to a person thinking the experience would end happily. The findings, reported in the journal Psychological Science, could add weight to the saying “leaving the best for last”.“Endings affect us in lots of ways and one is this ‘positivity effect,” said researcher Ed O'Brien, who led the study.“It is something motivational. You think ‘I might as well reap the benefits of this experience even though it is going to end’ or ‘I want to get something good out of this while I still can’.

“It is also possible that we have become used to expecting endings to be happy.”He added: “When you simply tell people something is the last, they may like that thing more.”In their study, the fed 52 male and female students five small chocolates of different flavours before asking them to rate their enjoyment as they ate.The flavours were ranked in different orders with some volunteers being told the chocolate was their last while others received no such warning. The study found those with the warnings found the last chocolate tastier than others.

Asked which chocolate was their favourite, those which knew chose it on more than two in three occasions. In contrast, those who were unaware rated it top in only 22 per cent of cases.Mr O'Brien, a graduate student in social psychology, said that due to the chocolates being rated individually, rather than all together at the end of the experiment, meant the results could not be explained by difference in recall. He added: “Many experiences have happy endings – from the movies and shows we watch to dessert at the end of the meal – and so many people may have a general expectation that things end well, which could bleed over into these unrelated or insignificant judgments.”

He said the findings could have negative implications on other aspects of life such as examiners marking their final paper.Meanwhile, candidates who interviewed first for a job may be viewed less favourably than those who are seen last.

Super Pricey Whisky

A rare whiskey has been sold for £44,000!!!! Thats about £1,700 a sip.

The bottle of Glenfiddich Janet Sheed Roberts Reserve was sold at auction in London to an anonymous telephone bidder. It is the second of 11 bottles to be released to the public. The first sold at Bonhams in Edinburgh in December for a record breaking £46,850, topping the previous world record of just under £30,000 for a bottle of single malt. The 11 bottles of the 1955 tipple are being released to honour Janet Sheed Roberts, the granddaughter of William Grant who founded the Glenfiddich distillery.Mrs Roberts, who celebrated her 110th birthday in August, is the oldest living person in Scotland, a spokeswoman for the distillery said.

Each bottle celebrates a decade of her life.Proceeds from the sale at the Honourable Artillery Company will go to Walking With The Wounded, a charity dedicated to the retraining and re-education of injured servicemen and women. The distillery is also supporting a group of injured veterans from the charity who are attempting to conquer Everest. In 2010, a 64-year-old Macallan malt and Lalique crystal decanter fetched $460,000 (£298,000) at an auction in New York.

Fairytales Turn Into Scarytales

Traditional fairytales are being ditched by parents for more modern stories because they are to scary for their children.

Research revealed one in five parents has scrapped old classics such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarves and Rapunzel in favour of more modern books. One third of parents said their children have been left in tears after hearing the gruesome details of Little Red Riding Hood. And nearly half of mothers and fathers refuse to read Rumplestiltskin to their kids as the themes of the story are kidnapping and execution.Similarly, Goldilocks and the Three Bears was also a tale likely to be left on the book shelf as parents felt it condones stealing.

The survey of 2,000 adults was commissioned to mark the launch of the hit US drama GRIMM, which starts tonight at 9pm on Watch, and sees six gritty episodes based on traditional fairytales. The poll found a quarter of parents polled wouldn't consider reading a fairytale to their child until they had reached the age of five, as they prompt too many awkward questions from their offspring. And 52 per cent of the parents said Cinderella didn't send a good message to their children as it portrays a young woman doing housework all day.

Steve Hornsey, General Manager, Watch, said: ''Bedtime stories are supposed to soothe children and send them off to sleep soundly.''But as we see in GRIMM, fairytales can be dark and dramatic tales so it's understandable that parents worry about reading them to young children.''''As adults we can see the innocence in fairytales, but a five year old with an over active imagination could take things too literally.

''Despite the dark nature of classic fairytales, as we see in GRIMM, good will triumph over evil and there is always a moral to the story.''When it comes to bedtime reading, over a third of parents don't like to tell their children about 'The Gingerbread Man' as he gets eaten by a fox.And 'Queen Bee' features a character called 'Simpleton,' which 35 per cent of mums and dads deemed unsuitable.

The study also found two thirds of mums and dads try to avoid stories which might give their children nightmares. However half of parents said traditional tales are more likely to have a strong moral message than a lot of modern kids' books, such as The Gruffalo, The Hungary Caterpillar and the Mr Men books.
