London Marathon 2012

37,500 people took part in this years London Marathon to raise money for charity.

Wilson Kipsang from Kenya won the mens elite race with a time of 2:04:44 and Mary Keitany, also from Kenya, defended her title with 2:18:37.  The wheel chair race was won by Britans David Weir, his sixth victory. And Shelly Woods won the womens version.But a woman runner collapsed and died near the finish of the 26.2-mile race.The event's organisers say the 30-year-old fell as she approached Buckingham Palace.Medical attention was given at the scene, but she was declared dead later in the afternoon.Claire Squires, who died after she collapsed during the London Marathon, was described as an "inspirational and beautiful person" by her family, who paid tribute to her today.

The family of Miss Squires said in a statement: "Words cannot explain what an incredible, inspirational, beautiful and driven person she was. She was loved by so many and is dearly missed by all of us."
They urged people to continue making donations on her Just Giving  website, which has received more than £300,000 in donations. Miss Squires had run the marathon in aid of the Samaritans.
Friends said she was well-known in her home town for her regular fund-raising efforts for a variety of causes. She ran the marathon on 2010 and also raised money with a sponsored bikini car wash with friends. Her close friend, Nicola Short, joined in the tributes to Miss Squire. The pair climbed Kilimanjaro together and raised £150,000 for the RAF Association.
