Smoking Is Bad For Animals Too...

We all know that smoking is bad for you and for the people around you too. But did you know that some chemicals in the smoke are very harmful for animals too…

Not long ago a recent anti-smoking campaign that has been launched by the Government. A vet surgery in Surrey found out about this and they have since started another small campaign urging all pet owners to just consider and to think about the lethal effects of cigarette smoke can have on your beloved pet. Whether it is a dog, cat, rabbit, chinchilla or whatever pet you may have, they can all be in danger of the deadly chemicals in cigarette smoke, so listen up…

One of the many ways in which the smoke can prove harmful for an animal is when they lick their fur to clean themselves. If somebody has been smoking where an animal lives and that animal licks its fur to clean itself, they can automatically take in more smoke than you first may think! The reason for this is that nicotine and tar collects in a residue on the animals’ fur, so when your pet comes to clean itself, it licks its fur so it then takes in all those harmful chemicals from the smoke into their system.

I’m sure we all know that if you (a human) smokes too much, it can lead to cancer. You may not know this but it is the same for animals too… They can also develop many cancers as well. How could you let your own beloved pet pick up cancer from yourself smoking? It just isn’t right! Don’t you agree!?

Another way is that if you own a pet dog, they tend to chew on things a lot. A cigarette’s butt is full of deadly toxins, so when you discard your cigarette all those toxins can find their way into a dogs system if it was to chew one… These toxins are VERY harmful to many animals. Just stop and think. Could you watch your pet pick up these diseases and infections just because you were too lazy to discard your cigarette properly?

Julian Peters from the Arthur Lodge Veterinary Group said: “I would urge all owners to keep on top of health checks for pets if they are exposed to smoke inhalations’”.

So just think to yourself for a minute. Could you watch your own pet die from your actions… Smoking doesn’t just harm yourself and people around you, it harms animals as well.
