7 million adults in the UK have never been online

So, while most of you are surfing the web, millions of adults across the UK have still never used the internet. This is a big shock! The Office for National Statistics (ONS) say that 14% of British adults do not use the web. 14% is equivalent to around 7.1 million adults.

Just over three in 10 people at the age of 75+ have used the internet before. Out of the 7.1 million, around 4.2 million are women that have never used a computer network. Since last year, one million more people are getting online, even though the figures are still high, this is a big improvement.

The ONS said: “Most of the people that haven't been online are elderly or disabled, but pointed out that the number of people over 75 going on the internet is rising.”

3.7 million who had never been online were disabled people.

  1. A hell of a lot of people who HAVE been on line are intellectually disabled - immersed in the self-centred immediacy of it all, checking out pictures and special interest sites - just fluttering around like moths. There's still a lot to be said for sitting quietly for hours - absorbing a good book or creating something of merit.
