After the dramatic opening ceremony broadcast to billions around the world, day 1 of the 2012 Olympic Games saw swimming and cycling events capture the headlines.
Plenty of action took place by the poolside with a total of 4 finals in the new aquatics centre. Ryan Lochte (USA) took gold in the 400-metre individual medley after rival Michael Phelps failed to qualify for the final. The women's 400-metre individual medley went to 16 year old Ye Shiwen (China) with a world record beating time of 4:28.43, while Sun Yang (China) came just 0.07 seconds off the pace of the men's 400-metre individual freestyle record time. Australia were able to sneak ahead of the Netherlands to win the 400-metre freestyle relay.
Team GB's Mark Cavendish failed to live up to expectation, finishing just 28th in the Road Race. The event was won by Alexander Vinokourov (Kazakhstan), who will retire after th games have ended.
China have clearly dominated this first day of competition with a healthy-looking 4 golds to reach the top of the table. Italy follow close behind with the USA in third. Great Britain failed to win a medal.
