Spain started strongly, Xabi Alonso scoring the first goal in the 19th minute. The French were falling further and further behind the world champions, they did have a few chances at shooting but they never made the best of it. In the second half, it seemed as though France were going to level out the game. But instead they gave a cheap penalty away in the 91st minute. Xabi Alonso scored the second goal of the night, ensuring that Spain went through to the semi finals; where they will at against Portugal.
