Y7's Specialist Schools Day

On Friday the 13th of July, a group called Steer safe came in and talk about mostly road accidents, prison and also what it's like to have someone you know that is close to you die in a car accident to the year 7's.

To start off the day, all of the Y7's went into the New/Girls Gym to meet all the staff and volunteers that works for Steer Safe and the different types of people that had come to speak to us. There was a whole range of them. There were: Police and ex Police staff, CSI, a paramedic, ex prisoners and also a person that someone very close to her had died in a car crash.

The Live Demonstration

There had been a crash in our schools coach park between a motor cycle and a car, the fire brigade was on the scene and showed all the Y7's what they did and why they did it, for example, when they are cutting the windscreen they hose it down with water, this prevents the glass from shattering onto the victim.

CPR

As part of the day a paramedic came in to do CPR training so we know what to do if someone is on the floor and not breathing, some bits where disgusting because the paramedic said, "If the food pipe has food in it and they are going to be sick, this means you have to choose a finger and get clearing it all out from their mouths."

Drugs

All the Y7's also got to meet an ex drug dealer, he explained that he used to look up to the other 'bad boys' as they had lots of money and they were on the guest lists for night clubs all over the city. But that's when he told us it went down hill, as he began to take drugs and sell them, and one day he got caught by the police and taken to Crown Court, the reason for this is because they where class a drugs, after Court he got sent to prison. He said it wasn't very nice and the rooms were horrible.

My Daughter

During the day we went and listened to a woman's story that had two lovely daughters that all went away in a flash. We listened to the story and everyone was overwhelmed to silence as the woman explained that she lost her eldest daughter in a crash, she was in the taxi and the other car that had no tax and the driver was a disqualified driver crashed into them!

Forensic evidence

In this workshop we learnt how to gather finger prints from a crime scene and also why they wear the big white clothes over them, the answer, to keep their thumb prints, hair and sweat going into their search results other which they have spent hours searching and will come back with the wrong result.

Evidence gathering

In this workshop we learnt how to interrogate a witness and a suspect, to do this we had to use the five W's and also how, after this we had a go on the face editing system where we tried to make a persons face on it, but the end result was nothing like the person we intended to do.

Court

In this we all had to be members of the Court and decide if a boy that had stolen a car was guilty or not guilty of charge, of course 7e being the kindest of classes sent him to prison for life.

And that's everything we learnt about during the day, I think all the y7's enjoyed it and liked how we all got involved with everything!
