South Yorkshire on flood alert after heavy downpours

We all know that we have been having some terrible weather lately in the UK. We are nearing middle of spring and by the looks of it, it doesn't look like we will be having a decent spring at all!
South Yorkshire is on flood alert, with fears that rivers could burst their banks after days of rain. The Environment Agency has placed flood alerts on rivers including the Don and its tributaries from Penistone to Kelham Island in Sheffield, and the River Sheaf and Porter Brook and their tributaries in the city. There were also fears the River Doe Lea at Bolsover and Netherthorpe could burst its banks.

Although recent downpours, which are predicted to continue until the middle of May, have led to a rise in some river levels, experts say that a below average level of rainfall over the last two years means that the severe floods experienced in South Yorkshire in June 2007 are unlikely to be repeated. But the rain has still wreaked havoc across the region, with many sports events postponed. Last night Sheffield Tigers postponed their speedway match at Owlerton against rivals Scunthorpe because of a waterlogged track.

So overall, it doesn't look like were going to be having much of a spring at all... It looks like people over the country won't be going very far on a day out, not when there could be floods across many places of the country! So it looks like I will be staying in the house for a while!

What are your thoughts about the UK's horrible weather?
